Be on the lookout for these symptoms of infertility

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

It’s tough when you’ve been trying to get pregnant for all this time and nothing seems to be going right. You might require some medical intervention so take a look at these symptoms of infertility before you phone to make an appointment.

Men and women show signs of infertility differently. Who would have thought, huh? Ladies first.

Symptoms of Infertility in Women

You could be infertile even though you don’t exhibit any of the following symptoms – but check them anyway just to be sure. Ensure that you inform your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms listed here. These aren’t the only symptoms of infertility, but these are the ones you’d be most likely to notice.

  • Irregular Periods – You could be infertile if you aren’t having your period, if the time between your periods is rather long (that means like months between periods) or if you bleed only a little bit. (All of which wouldn’t be so terrible if you weren’t attempting to have a baby.) On the other hand, a cycle shorter than 24 days, very heavy bleeding, unpredictable cycles and acute cramps might also be warning signs. Don’t stress out if you’ve just stopped taking the pill or some other hormonal contraceptive and you haven’t menstruated yet, it might take up to 6 months for your cycle to get working again.
  • Painful Intercourse – Uncomfortable sex can be a symptom of endometriosis, which is when cells that are generally only present inside the uterus grow outside as well and this can also influence your fertility badly. Why? Because if you and your partner aren’t doing IT regularly enough, you bring down your odds. If you are uptight because you are aiming to achieve the big ‘O’ and don’t, that can be unhelpful Either way, if you experience pain during intercourse you should have it assessed, not only to help you get pregnant, but for the sake of your relationship as well. If you experience any pain in your pelvic area even when you’re not having sex you could need medical intervention, you don’t want to take a risk!
  • Coarse Hair – Do you have a tendency to grow coarse hair in all the wrong areas? I understand it’s hard to admit feeling like pubescent boy with pimples and fuzz growing all over the place, but greasy skin, skin tags, recurring acne (not stress related) or excessive hair growth that can’t be blamed on genetics are all symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS – where there are numerous small cysts in the ovaries). Infertility is one of the side-effects of PCOS. It gets worse. A woman with PCOS is also more likely to be more bulky around her middle, causing her to have an apple shape rather than an hourglass shape, and she’ll battle to shed excess weight. I’d recommend you have that seen to!
  • Weight – Pregnancy may also elude you and your partner if your weight isn’t proportional to your height – underweight or overweight – both could be problematic. Growing babies is thirsty work and your system knows that, so despite the fact that you might like being a size 2, your size 2 body may not like being pregnant. If you are too fat, the fat causes your body to manufacture excess estrogen, which will also influence your ovulation. Too much exercise to get rid of any excess weight isn’t a helpful idea either as this can also result in infertility. Living a healthy life by eating properly and exercising will not only make it easier to get pregnant, but you’ll live longer too!
  • Your Biological Clock – After the 35 years of age your fertility drops off rapidly so don’t ignore the clock for too long – in so far as it is up to you of course! If you’re over age of 35 and you and your partner have been trying for 6 months you should make an appointment with a doctor.
  • Infections – Urinary tract infections and yeast infections that you can’t seem to shake off are also not good news for fertility as they may be symptoms of PID (pelvic inflammatory disease).

Symptoms of Infertility in Men

If you are a male, there are several easily perceptible things that could be symptoms of infertility, but you would generally need some medical testing to pick up difficulties with sperm count and motility.

Below is a list of symptoms of male infertility:

  • Inability to ejaculate
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Undescended testes
  • Other physical deformities

You need the whole lot to be in tip-top working order to make and distribute sperm effectively.

Not that I’m saying I’ve noticed anything, but do you struggle to manage your weight? Your hormones can get rather messed up if you’re overweight because an excess of fat cells will cause your body to manufacture excess estrogen – not good for the men! You’ve always said you wanted to get fit and eat right – this is as good a time as any to get a move on!

My oh my! That sounds like a rather long list of the symptoms of infertility, but don’t get all tense, it’s not as horrid as it seems. Medical science has come a long way and most, if not all of the difficulties mentioned above are treatable to some degree. With a few lifestyle changes and possibly some medical help assistance, you guys ought to be well on your way to a happy and healthy pregnancy.

Symptoms of Infertility – Age, Sex and Lifestyle Factors

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Symptoms of Infertility – Definitions

When a couple is unable to become pregnant after 12 months of unprotected intercourse, they are considered infertile. Infertility is defined as the inability to reproduce.

Couples have different reactions to the news of being infertile. Extreme reactions are most noted in couples that are childless.

Couple who are infertile and who’ve never had a baby are classified under primary infertility.

On another note, couples who classify under secondary infertility are those who have had a baby before but are now having trouble getting pregnant once more.

The Male Factor

Various factors, both emotional and physical, can lead to infertility.

Infertility cases in men, like low sperm count, retrograde ejaculation, scarring from sexually transmitted diseases, hormone deficiency, and impotence, make up approximately 30-40% of cases.

Frequent marijuana use and intake of prescription drugs like cimetidine, nitorfurantoin, and spironolactone may affected sperm count.

The Female Factor

Ovulation dysfunction, fallopian tube abnormality, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, scarring from STDs, hormonal imbalances, pelvic infection, poor nutrition, and tumors are just some of these “female factors.” These comprise 40 to 50 % of infertility cases among couples.

Around 10 to 30% of infertility cases are attributed to risk factors from both male and female and other unknown causes.

It has been found that a small number, just 10 to 20%, of couples fail to conceive after trying for a year. It is very crucial for couples to contine trying to have a baby at least for 12 months.

Age Influenced Factors

Healthy couples who have intercourse regularly and are below 30 years old have only a 25 to 30% chance a month of becoming pregnant. A woman is most fertile when she’s in her 20s. Pregnancy for women more than 35 years old is 10% less, even lower for those over 40.

More Non Age Related Causes

Factors related to age are not the sole reasons for infertility. Infertility may also be worsened by the following:

* Multiple sex partners (increases risk for STD)
* STDs
* Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) history
* Men with epididymitis or orchitis history
* Mumps among men
* Varicocele in males
* Health history citing DES exposure (both sexes)
* Eating disorders among women
* Anovulation and irregular menstruation
* Endometriosis
* Problems with the uterus or the cervix
* Long-term disease like diabetes

Infertility Causes – Sex, Age & Lifestyle Factors

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Symptoms of Infertility – Definitions

When a couple is unsuccessful at having a baby after 12 months of unprotected, regular intercourse, they are considered infertile. Infertility is the inability to have a baby.

Couples respond in different ways after being told they are infertile. Severe reactions occur more frequently among childless couples.

Infertile couples who’ve never had children are classified under primary infertility.

In another light, secondary infertility refers to couples who had successfully gotten pregnant before but are now having problems conceiving.

The Man Factor

A number of factors, both physical and emotional, can trigger infertility.

Male-exclusive factors such as low sperm count, retrograde ejaculation, scarring from sexually transmitted diseases, hormone deficiency, and impotence, make up around 30-40% of infertility cases.

Sperm count may be negatively influenced by marijuana abuse or use of prescription drugs, like cimetidine, spironolactone, and nitrofurantoin.

The Female Factor

Ovulation dysfunction, fallopian tube abnormality, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, scarring from STDs, hormonal imbalances, pelvic infection, poor nutrition, and tumors are just some of these “female factors.” These are responsible for 40 to 50% of infertility in couples.

Factors contributed by both individuals and unidentifiable factors are responsible for 10 to 30% of all infertility cases.

It is projected that just 10 to 20% fail to get pregnant after trying for one year. It is essential for couples to keep trying to conceive for a year at the very least.

Age-Related Factors

Healthy partners both below 30 years of age having intercourse regularly only have a 25 to 30% probability every month to become pregnant. The peak of a woman’s fertility is in her 20s. The likelihood of pregnancy for women above 35 years old is less than 10% each month, even less for those beyond 40 years old.

Other Causes Not Age Related

Infertility is not solely blamed on age-related factors. The risk of infertility is also heightened because of the following factors:

* Multiple sexual partners (higher possibility of getting STDs)
* STIs
* PID history (pelvic inflammatory disease)
* Orchitis or epididymitis history in males
* Mumps among men
* Vein engorgement in the scrotum
* A history that includes exposure to DES
* Eating problems among females
* Irregular menstruation and anovulation
* Endometriosis
* Problems with the uterus or the cervix
* Long-term disease like diabetes
