Babies and your home

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Delivering a baby is a wonderful experience.Although it is wonderful, there are still many pains and stresses that usually come with delivering a baby.Simply because of that most of the babies are usually delivered in the hospital. But there is absolutely a growing movement of women having babies at home. And contrary to the most popular opinion, it is in fact safer than most people would imagine.  So in this article we are going to look at delivering your baby at home.

First of all when a woman just chooses to have a baby at home, then it is usually performed by a midwife.Midwives are actually women who really assist in delivering the baby.  Much like a doctor’s role except in the fact that they stress delivering the baby in a natural way.  That is one of the main reasons women come to me in my homebirth midwives San Diego services. They absolutely need to have a baby without using drugs during delivery.

Now the common thought is that, to ease the pain, women always use drugs for delivery. But in reality what most women don’t really realize is the mere fact that using drugs just slow down the birth process. And a lot of times it even makes it harder to deliver the baby. While a homebirth sometimes uses the very common option of delivering in water in order to make the transition for the baby. This method or process of child delivery is called a water birth. That is one of the big ways to deliver in my homebirth San Diego services.

Finally most people believe it isn’t safe to deliver a baby at home because there isn’t a doctor present.  But that isn’t the case. Most of the women who do midwifery are actually medically trained and surely understand what to do in cases of an emergency. Most are licensed like the women in my San Diego home birth service. This licensing definitely requires a board to really oversee their work and knowledge.

So hopefully you can see that having a baby at home isn’t as dangerous as people think. If you are pregnant then it is actually a good option that might be wonderful for you.

People and their misconceptions about midwives

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Midwifery is a profession that takes care of expectant mothers. They are there when the mothers are giving birth and they also provide prenatal care. And they also provide postpartum care.Midwives are not nurses but if they choose to, they can be. But they have rules and regulations and they also have a governing body.  But where do the misunderstandings come in?

In general, the misunderstandings happen for those that do homebirths.  In my practice of helping women as a San Diego midwife, homebirths are where people get confused.People think that home birthing is an unsafe way of delivering a baby. But if the pregnancy is a low-risk one then this method is very safe. Also, midwives have some necessary medical equipments at hand in case something serious happens. Most complications are avoided because of the method that they deliver babies.

This is the part where the benefits come in.  As some midwives in San Diego perform their services they do it with a natural delivery. This kind of delivery involves no medicine while birthing. No medicine is administered to the mother during birthing. But by not using medicines to help the mother during the delivery the birthing can finish at a faster time.  Because most women don’t realize medication actually slows down delivery. So by not using medicines during labor the delivery will done faster than the normal delivery.

And when the mother decides to undergo water birthing more positive things can be benfited by both the mother and the baby. From doing waterbirth in San Diego in my practice the water eases the delivery. The water soothes the muscles of the pregnant mother resulting to an easier delivery of the baby. And another good thing about water birth is that the shock and stress that the baby endures during birthing is reduced.

As you can see there are misconceptions about midwives and their profession. But I’m hoping that you will understand that this method is safe for low-risk pregnancies. Also, they have a regulating body.  So midwives do have to go to extensive schooling. They have some know-how in medical procedures that is needed in birthing. So mothers should not worry about their safety while giving birth since midwives have all the necessary medical equipments for emergency purposes. It can be a good choice for women.

Advantages and disadvantages of homebirth

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

One of the choices women have during pregnancy is how they will deliver. What I’m trying to say when I said how they deliver is where do they want to give birth-in the hospital or at their homes. Most women don’t know that they have a choice on how to deliver their babies because they think that giving birth at their own homes is dangerous. But there are of course critics who are wary of this method. But by researching they can learn that this method is safe, if not, as safe as a hospital delivery.

There are definitely critics who do not believe in the safety of a homebirth.  From my observations from my practice as a San Diego midwife I have found it to be absolutely safe. The risks are the same either in a hospital or homebirth as I have witnessed from the 300 homebirths I have assisted in.Having a baby in the hospital or at home doesn’t make any difference in minimizing those risks. On the ohter hand, the risks also would not increase because of this.

So what are the risks of doing this method?  Well for one people worry if some complications occur. They presume that the people who administer homebirths are not nurses and they are not medically inclined.  Well as a homebirth midwife in San Diego we do know medical procedures. All the necessary equipments for the common complications of a chilbirth are always with us.It is but natural that any serious complications that would arise during birthing should be addressed by a doctor. But that is still similar to what happens in a hospital.

Homebirths are only recommended for women who have pregnancies that are low in risk.  If a woman is found to have possible complications any good midwife would not encourage this method.  This is standard procedure for all San Diego licensed midwife. This is standard procedure because they are limited in the medical procedures that they can do.That the reason why they make sure that all high risk pregnancies be delivered in a hospital.

For those who do not like this method it will be very hard to convince them to do so.But for the women who likes to try this method then they should know that this method is safe if not as safe as a delivery in the hospital.

Boon of having a baby by water birthing

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

One uncommon way to give birth is water birthing but it is already gaining some popularity.  It isn’t the usual way of having a baby on a medical bed.But it is safe to use in giving birth to a baby.

So what we are going to do is take a look at this particular process of giving birth and looking at its advantages. These are going to come from experience that I have gained as a San Diego midwife.  First of all water birth is the process of having a baby in water. It is usually done in a tub filled with warm water. One reason why they say water birthing is good for the baby is because the baby will enter an evironment similar to where he lived for 9 months which is water.  They have been in water for 9 months and it helps the baby get adjusted.

It is also shown in studies that it helps in pain management. That is a big relief for women to hear. A lot of times it allows the use of no medicine.  I have performed many without medicine as well as many other midwives San Diego I have spoken with.

Is this method a safe way to give birth? It is safe to use for most of the cases as studies have shown.Due to certain medical conditions,in some cases, it isn’t advisable to use. I have had that happen in my water birth San Diego service. Going to a specialist first is the best way.

Another benefit of having a water birth is it reduces the risk of skin tears.  This can be a painful occurence during delivery. But undergoing through water birthing will reduce those pains.  Because it soothes the skin.

If you follow these procedures this could be a choice of delivery for you.Benefits will be plenty for the mother and the baby if they use this method.Consult your doctor first to know if it is okay for you.
